WetlandCare Australia -Successful Projects
Estuarine Wetland Health Assessment
The Estuarine Wetland Assessment project was funded by the NSW Government's Environmental Trust. It developed a sound methodology for assessing and prioritising estuarine wetlands, including intertidal mangroves & saltmarsh and dunal swamps & lagoons by reviewing and adapting existing assessment techniques & the guidance of a Technical Advisory Group (TAG). Selected wetlands were assessed in subcatchments in the Tweed, Brunswick, Richmond & Clarence catchments.
Key achievements 2005/06:
- Assessment of current estuarine assessment methodologies and adaptation of techniques to assess estuarine wetlands
- Technical Advisory Group review of assessment techniques
- Prioritisation of wetlands to be assessed using GIS and local steering committees for Tweed, Brunswick and Richmond catchments
- Field health assessments of identified wetlands in the Tweed, Brunswick and Richmond catchments
- Generation of wetland priority register and health mapping (Tweed, Brunswick and Richmond)
- Series of workshops held with Land & Water Conservation funding to demonstrate assessment techniques
- Development of WetlandCare Australia database to centralise wetland health information and produce wetland health summary reports
