Wetland Care Australia - Current Projects
Restoration of Montane endangered ecological community (EEC) wetlands of the New England tablelands
Montane wetlands are unique and valuable ecosystems that occur above 600m in altitude and are home to many rare plants and animals; they are also regarded as endangered ecological communities (EEC's). There are two main types of montane wetlands; upland lagoons and montane peatlands. For more information on the types of montane wetlands that are considered to be EEC's, please click here.
The Montane EEC Wetland Project involves the planning and implementation of restoration works for montane EEC wetlands. WetlandCare Australia has been funded by the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (NRCMA) to work with landholders across the New England Tablelands over the last three years in protecting and restoring these unique and beautiful Montane wetlands.
Typical on-ground works have involved;
- structural alterations
- planting of native species
- fencing of wetland areas
- installing alternative stock water provisions
- weed removal
- feral animal control
What does the current project involve?
The current Montane EEC Wetland Project continues the NRCMAs commitment to assist landholders in their efforts to manage these rare and fragile wetland ecosystems. It involves the planning and implementation of restoration works for montane EEC's on private properties within the NRCMA area (Port Macquarie - Qld Border - Great Dividing Range). The project will enable the preparation of plans of management for priority montane EEC Wetland sites. Plans will include assessments of biodiversity and threatening agents within these areas. Plans will help landowners determine the amount of funding required for restoration and rehabilitation of montane EEC's and the management of threats including weeds, feral animals modified hydrology (water flows) and stock.
Eligible properties will be considered upon receipt of a verbal or written expression of interest (see Related Articles below).
Eligible properties will be assessed under a number of criteria including:
a) Area of montane wetland to be rehabilitated
b) Value for money of works proposed and achievability within project timeframes
c) Landholder commitment
d) Broader project outcomes (e.g. collaborations and water quality benefits).
Funding will be allocated to landholders through a tender process early in 2009. Any persons interested in obtaining further information or nomination forms should view the links below, or contact Adam Gosling on 02 6681 6169 or adamgosling@wetlandcare.com.au
