Australian Wetland Network
The Australian Wetland Network (AWN) is the new name for the Australian Wetland Alliance, which was initially established in 1994 to facilitate input by Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) to the Ramsar Conference of Parties held in Brisbane in 1996. Since then its members have supported an ongoing role in wetland conservation, strategic planning, national reporting and policy. AWN recently hosted a forum at the Hunter Wetland Centre for NSW members on World Wetlands Day.
Future Farming on the Floodplain
Would you like to use drone technology to manage your floodplain farm? Are you interested in fencing without materials? If so, come to a field day run by Conservation Volunteers Australia and North Coast Local Land Services, in partnership with Lismore City Council.
Restoring Fish Habitat in Ballina - With Trees
WetlandCare Australia has partnered with OzFish and Ballina Shire Council to revegetate an area of wetlands adjacent to Chickiba Creek and Angels Beach Road, North Ballina, NSW.
Glenrock Restoration Project
Conservation Volunteers Australia received a grant from the NSW Environmental Trust to restore coastal Endangered Ecological Communities (EECs) and threatened species habitat at Glenrock. Partnering with WetlandCare Australia, the project will host community events and create and distribute a newsletter to educate the community about the importance of the Glenrock State Conservation area.
Fish Need Trees Too - Restoring Mullet Creek
WetlandCare Australia's partner organisation Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) has teamed up with Wollongong City Council and William Beach Bushcare to create a biodiverse planting at William Beach Reserve on Mullet Creek. Mullet Creek is a tributary to Lake Illawarra and riparian vegetation in these areas is key to maintaining and improving the health of our waterways and fish populations.
Restoring Koala Habitat on the Wilson’s River
WetlandCare Australia has recently been awarded an Australian Government 20 Million Trees project to revegetate over 5 hectares of Koala habitat adjacent to the Wilson’s River near Lismore, NSW. This project will see 5000 native trees planted, restoring a strategic habitat corridor to enhance habitat connectivity for the Koala population and improve the riparian corridor of the Wilson’s River.
Hunter Region Partners Restoring Migratory Shorebird Habitat
A partnership between local environmental organisations in the Hunter region and the NSW State Government is having a big impact on restoring shorebird habitat in the Hunter Wetlands National Park. Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) received funding from the NSW Environmental Trust for a two-year project to restore the shorebird habitat. CVA is working closely with WetlandCare Australia, Hunter Bird Observers Club and the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service to achieve the project outcomes.
Tregeagle Field Day on Macadamias and Biodiversity
Macadamia and other orchardists as well as rural lifestyle landholders in the Tregeagle, Marom Creek,
Chilcotts Grass, and Lindendale areas are invited to attend this hands-on field day. The field day is targeted at those interested in gaining the benefits of managing biodiversity on a productive farm, creek line restoration, camphor laurel control and active revegetation on their rural properties. Thursday, 2 June 9am to 2pm (includes morning tea and lunch) - RSVP essential.

Crowd Funding Koala Food Trees
Koala populations in the Ballina region are in decline, and WetlandCare Australia is working with landholders to restore Koala habitat and provide food trees across the local rural landscape. But we need more funds to keep the project going, and you can help us archive this by supporting our crowd funding campaign.
Everhard Industries Supporting WetlandCare Australia
As part of Everhard Industries’ 90th year anniversary celebrations, staff at the Australian family owned company are fundraising for WetlandCare Australia. The fundraising will include monthly raffles and other competitions, as well as collecting aluminium cans for recycling. The Everhard company has agreed to match staff fundraising to the value of $900.
Belmont Wetland State Park Trust
Belmont Wetlands State Park Trust in partnership with WetlandCare Australia and Conservation Volunteers is delighted to announce we have received funding from the NSW Environmental Trust to reach out to park neighbours and visitors. World Wetlands Day in Lismore
This year as part of World Wetlands Day celebrations WetlandCare Australia, Conservation Volunteers Australia, Ngulingah Local Aboriginal Land Council, Banyam Baigham Landcare and Lismore City Council are holding an event at Slaters Creek, Pine St in North Lismore on Sunday the 31st of January between 9am – 1pm. All ages are welcome and activities range from planting trees and grasses, walks and talks, to kids crafts and activities.
Restoring Koala Habitat in Cudgen Nature Reserve
WetlandCare Australia is very pleased to be working with key partners including NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Tweed Shire Council and Friends of the Koala on the important task of protecting the critical Koala population on the Tweed Coast. Community support is needed right now to save the Tweed Coast Koala population before it’s too late, and you can get involved online.
Can Do Campers
WetlandCare Australia is embarking on an innovative environmental education program called ‘Can Do Campers’ with thanks to funding from the NSW Environmental Trust and in partnership with North Coast Holiday Parks and Red Rock Holiday Park. During this project we will design an environmental action program that can be run by Park Managers to engage their guests in the local environment, providing hands-on education, greater environmental awareness, an additional holiday experience and an improved local environment.
East Ballina Fox Control on Crown Lands
Recent monitoring activities in bushland reserves around East Ballina have shown significant fox populations living within these areas. WetlandCare Australia and Reconeco Ecological Consultants will be undertaking pest management activities for foxes within areas of Crown Land in East Ballina to combat this problem in the coming months.
Restoring the catchments and coastal wetlands of the Great Barrier Reef
Conservation Volunteers Australia and their new partner organization WetlandCare Australia will be working with Greening Australia and Birdlife Australia to deliver a 200 hectare project of on-ground catchment and coastal wetland restoration works, restoring key habitats to improve water quality in the Great Barrier Reef region. The project will be implementing science based methods to protect threatened species habitats and maintain biodiversity.
Upland Wetlands Incentive Project
WetlandCare Australia and the Northern Tablelands Local Land Services are continuing their successful partnership working with landholders to manage and restore wetlands on their properties for improved farming efficiency as well as ecological outcomes.

Port of Brisbane Field Guide
In August 2015, WetlandCare Australia secured funding from the Port of Brisbane Pty. Ltd to develop a tool for professionals and community to use to enable quick identification of common freshwater wetland plants and animals found in Moreton Bay. We have created a quick reference card that can be viewed online here.
Protecting and enhancing critical wetlands in the Nambucca Estuary
WetlandCare Australia has recently been awarded an NSW Environmental Trust Grant to work with landholders in the Nambucca Estuary catchment. This project will focus on enhancing and protecting EEC wetland habitats across key sites in the lower Nambucca River Catchment.
Planning for the Future of Tootgarook Wetland, Victoria
Mornington Peninsula Shire is currently developing the Tootgarook Wetland Management Plan, in partnership with WetlandCare Australia, to identify and carry out actions with Government, Community and Landholders to protect, enhance and restore the wetland and its catchment. Your input is welcomed and will help establish a common set of objectives for the long term management of the Tootgarook Wetland.
WetlandCare Australia Merges With Conservation Volunteers Australia
WetlandCare Australia is pleased to announce that we have merged with Conservation Volunteers Australia, providing new opportunities for our two organisations to conserve, restore and protect wetlands, catchments and coasts across Australia, while inspiring people to take action. Our combined resources and capabilities enable us to tackle projects across the country of national scale and significance including: Catchment restoration to improve water quality along the Great Barrier Reef; Planning and restoration of wetlands of international significance; Wetlands, Catchments and Coasts conservation initiatives and Threatened species. Ian Walker, Director of Conservation, Conservation Volunteers Australia and WetlandCare Australia, welcomes the merger in an open letter. .
Joining The Dots On The Native Watermouse
WetlandCare Australia has been successful in obtaining funding through various local government grants to try and join the dots on locating the vulnerable water mouse, Xeromys myoides. Working with consultant and Sunshine Coast based water mouse researcher Janina Kaluza UQ, WetlandCare Australia will be out in the mangroves and saltmarsh from Jacobs Well to Beachmere in the coming months on the hunt for signs of the water mouse.
Ballina Shire Koala Habitat Restoration
Ballina Shire Council with WetlandCare Australia are launching a project to trial a new species of Eucalypt as a farmer-friendly Koala food tree on the Alstonville Plateau. A free information session for landholders who would like to get involved in the trial will be held on September 24th 2015 at Alstonville Garden House at 2 pm with refreshments provided.
Wilsons River - Restoring Wetlands and Riparian Koala Communities
WetlandCare Australia is working with a landholder at Tuckurimba, Northern NSW, who has recently been awarded a 25th Anniversary Landcare Grant to undertake bush regeneration activities throughout his 78 hectare property. A corridor of trees will be planted to provide food for the local Koala population and will serve as a connecting link for them between the vegetation communities on the property.
Little Llangothlin Lagoon Ramsar Site - Restoring Critically Endangered Woodland
WetlandCare Australia has recently been awarded an Australian Government 20 Million Trees project to revegetate 45 hectares at Little Llangothlin Lagoon Nature Reserve. WetlandCare Australia will be working in partnership with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Glen Industries to achieve the on ground works.
20 Million Trees Hexam
Hexham Swamp adjoins Hunter Wetlands Centre and flows into the Hunter Estuary Wetlands Ramsar Site. It is listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands of Australia, and is part of the Hunter Estuary Important Bird Area. WetlandCare Australia is coordinating a large scale revegetation project at Hexham Swamp, as part of the Australian Government’s 20 Million Trees program.
Riparian Rehabilitation on the Clarence River South Arm
WetlandCare Australia has received funding through the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust Habitat Action Grant to undertake habitat restoration works with a landholder to improve aquatic habitat on the South Arm of the Clarence Estuary.

South East Wetland Carers Network
The South East Wetland Carers Network (SEWCN) is a partnership driven by South East Local Land Services, WetlandCare Australia and Conservation Volunteers that aims to protect and restore 1000 ha of coastal wetlands to act as bio diverse carbon stores.
Green Army Ballina-Byron
WetlandCare Australia and Campbell Page employment services are co-ordinating a Green Army works team to undertake much needed wetland restoration works across the Richmond and Brunswick River catchments. The team, funded by the Australian Government Department of Environment’s Green Army Programme, will be helping to rehabilitate local environments, including Ballina Shire Council Reserve lands in East Ballina.
Northern Corridor Connections
WetlandCare Australia has recently begun delivery of the Northern Corridor Connections environmental restoration project, funded by North Coast Local Land Services (or LLS).
Outcomes from the Ramsar Forum on the Wise Use of Wetlands in Australia
On November 12 Australia welcomed heads of state, ministers, heads of International Organizations alongside social entrepreneurs, businesses executives, indigenous leaders, park rangers and renowned conservationists at the IUCN World Parks Congress. The Ramsar Convention took this opportunity to engage with the world’s environmental leaders to work towards its overall mission to reverse the loss of wetlands.
World Parks Congress 2014
WetlandCare Australia is excited to be working with the Ramsar Convention Secretariat to host a forum for the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014’s parallel events at Sydney Olympic Park on November 12th.
Ocean Shores Public School Wetlands Restoration Project
In 2009 WetlandCare Australia began working with Ocean Shores Public School to restore their unique on-school wetland. Since that time the project has achieved many major milestones, with one of the most fantastic outcomes has been the discovery of a living Mitchell's Rainforest Snail, a critically endangered invertebrate who calls the school’s wetland home.
Batemans Bay Wetland Workshop September 28th
WetlandCare Australia will be holding a workshop and field day in Batemans Bay on Sunday 28th September 2014 as a part of the South East Local Land Services Coastal Wetlands Project.
Byron Creek Headwater Restoration
WetlandCare Australia has been working with farmers in the Byron Bay hinterland to undertake the restoration works of riparian vegetation along Byron Creek since 2012. Over 1 kilometre of Byron Creek has now been successfully revegetated with over 3,000 native riparian species being planted and an area of 1 hectare of native vegetation being re-established.

Restoring Floodplain Health to the Richmond River
Funded by the North Coast Local Land Services, WetlandCare Australia is working in partnership with Richmond River County Council and NSW Department of Primary Industries to implement priority management actions at six key sites within the Richmond River Estuary.
Endangered Ecological Community Restoration at East Ballina Headlands and Wetlands
Ballina Coastcare and WetlandCare Australia have joined forces to restore over 30 hectares of endangered littoral rainforest, swamp sclerophyll, coast cypress, coastal saltmarsh and swamp oak forest. This project will restore fragmented endangered vegetation corridors by tackling the numerous invasive weeds that threaten their ecological integrity, including Weeds of National Significance such as ground asparagus and lantana.
Little Llangothlin Lagoon
WetlandCare Australia and the Northern Tablelands Local Land Services are working in partnership, funded by the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country program, to protect and enhance the ecological character of the Little Llangothlin Lagoon Ramsar site.
Newcastle Wetland Connections Program
Newcastle Wetland Connections is a program led by WetlandCare Australia and funded by the Australian Government to restore urban waterways in Newcastle.The project area includes Dark and Boatman Creeks, the University campus, Newcastle Wetlands Reserve, Market Swamp, Warabrook Wetlands and the Hunter Wetlands Centre, a Ramsar-listed wetland of international significance.
Fivebough and Tuckerbil Wetlands Management Plan
WetlandCare Australia are currently putting together an updated, adaptive Management Plan for the Fivebough and Tuckerbil Wetlands. These Ramsar listed wetlands of international importance are located near Leeton in south west NSW. Stay tuned for community consultation announcements and project progress.
Mid North Coast Saltmarsh Recovery
The Mid North Coast Saltmarsh Recovery project focuses on building the resilience of saltmarsh communities between Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie, NSW. Saltmarsh supports a range of critical environmental services including providing important estuarine habitat, water filtration, buffering against erosion and protection against impacts of sea level rise. Saltmarsh communities are also valuable carbon sinks.
Fivebough-Tuckerbil Wetlands Ramsar Site Management Plan
WetlandCare Australia has been awarded a project to develop a management plan for the Fivebough and Tuckerbil Wetlands. The wetlands are located in the heart of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, just north-east of Leeton NSW. Fivebough-Tuckerbil is listed under the Ramsar convention as a wetland of international importance, primarily for its great diversity and abundance of waterbirds. The site is managed by the NSW Land & Property Management Authority - Crown Lands.
Regenerating Koala Habitat in the Hunter Estuary
When you think of Koalas’ do swamps spring to mind? Swamp Mahogany trees found in wetlands are a preferred food species for this much-loved marsupial. WetlandCare Australia has received funds from the NSW Environmental Trust to regenerate a beautiful patch of Swamp Sclerophyll Forest at the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens on the Pacific Highway in Raymond Terrace, NSW. The site is listed under NSW planning policies to protect Koala Habitat.
Restoring Giant Barred Frog habitat in the Numinbah Valley
Work to restore critical habitat for the endangered Giant Barred Frog, Mixophyes iteratus, is underway at a property located between Lamington and Springbrook National Parks, South East Queensland. The property holds extremely high ecological value in terms of both habitat and connectivity between these two World Heritage listed areas, and is home to numerous threatened flora and fauna species.
Delivering Biodiversity Dividends for the Barratta Creek Catchment
WetlandCare Australia, with support through funding from the Australian Government’s Clean Energy Future Biodiversity Fund, will protect, manage and enhance the high ecological functional values of the Barratta Creek Catchment which forms the main artery of the Bowling Green Bay wetlands, the only Ramsar site in north Queensland.
